The New Mexico State University Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity in the William Conroy Honors College will host the third annual Research and Creativity Open House from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19 at the Conroy Honors Center.

“The goal of this event is to introduce more undergraduates to the culture of research and creative scholarship at NMSU, and to put these activities on their radar earlier in their time at NMSU,” said Tracey Miller-Tomlinson, founder and director of the Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity. “The open house is not just for Honors students or Crimson Scholars; it is for the entire undergraduate community.”

All current and prospective students are welcome and encouraged to attend the free event. Priority registration will close at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17. To register, visit https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=qIfso7ifWEG6j_EbrOHrqlJpvcCUgwVHgsD-b6wmxylUQTFVTTkwWkVTTUlVM1BWSUNMUU80MTM3MS4u.

In the registration, students are asked to choose which sites they would like to visit for the three 30-minute sessions, which run from 4:45 to 6:45 p.m. More than 30 faculty researchers are participating in the sessions and will show their assigned group of students their labs, offices, collections and studios.

Participants can see what is happening at NMSU in departments from all colleges, including work in animal and plant sciences, music, public health, education, theater, art conservation, chemistry, engineering, archeology and much more. Prospective students are asked to attend a welcome orientation at the Conroy Honors Center from 4 to 4:30 p.m. At 6:45 p.m., participants are welcome to return to the Conroy Honors Center to enjoy pizza.

Students who wish to sign up for a session at the engineering labs must wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Parents or guardians may attend as well.

“Some students discover exciting work happening in their own departments, but many students have said they really enjoy the opportunity to get out of their comfort zone and find something faculty and students are doing, that they didn’t even realize was happening here,” Miller-Tomlinson said. “This is the best way to show students what research and creative scholarship are like behind the scenes so they can decide whether it might be right for them.”
